QUICK RELEASE VALVES: PURPOSE & FUNCTIONALITY

The WM-513A quick release valve is used to reduce the time required to de-actuate an air-operated device. It rapidly releases downstream pressure in response to decay in the valve’s supply. The WM-513A has two outlet ports, so it can simultaneously exhaust two break chambers or airbags. This low-cost, high-flow quick-release valve can be used as a replacement for most competitive units.

Quick release valves have a significant impact on the operational performance of a pneumatic system. The quick exhaust means a reduction in wasted energy, and it’s less likely to cause wear and tear on the components. 

  • Speed Increase - Cylinder speed is vital in the operation of a quick release valve. The pace is usually determined by where the incoming pressure arrives and decides if the increased rate will increase the cylinder’s stress and push beyond their safe limits.
  • Lowers Pressure - Installation of a quick exhaust valve can reduce the force required on a brake cylinder’s inlet side. If we use the example of exerting 60psi instead of 90psi, the cycle rate significantly lowers for a pneumatic application. Allowing for savings in energy, maintenance, and capacity on the compressor too.

  • Protects the Pipeline System - Air release valves protect the pipeline system and maintain its efficiency. With valves allowing large volumes of the incoming air, they will enable pipe protection by releasing the air at the bottom of the chamber and stopping it from coming back up. It’s important because pipes can collapse under negative pressure. 
  • Automatic Operation - Once an air release valve is installed, it consistently runs without an operator’s interference.

SIZE & APPLICATONS

The Pneumatic valves are sized based on the flow required to get incoming air to the cylinder and outgoing air to the exhaust port. The limiting factor on valve size is often the exhaust air. This is particularly true on the return stroke, where the piston’s incoming area is smaller than the outgoing area. When a cylinder returns, more air is flowing out of it than into it because the rod is taking up some of the space. When the exhaust air is routed to the atmosphere before the valve, it allows for a smaller valve in the application.

A quick-release valve is designed to allow air to release rapidly. It effectively speeds up air release from the brake chambers of a vehicle to let the brakes release quicker. They usually feature a single supply port and two delivery ports.

What is the function of a quick release valve?

The function of a quick-release valve is to exhaust valves of air from a brake chamber. The valve is usually positioned nearby the chamber, and as the air flows toward the chamber, it passes through the quick release valve. Pressure is then held until the pedal is released, and the air is quickly released out the bottom of the quick release valve. Meaning it doesn’t have to travel far to be expelled.

What is crack pressure on a quick release valve?

Cracking pressure is the minimum upstream pressure required to open a valve enough to see the first sign of flow. It’s down to the pressure differential between the valve’s inlet and outlet ports when the flow is detected.
