Rotary Position Sensors: Purpose & Functionality

Rotary position sensors are integrated circuits that detect an object's movement and translate its angular mechanical position to an electrical signal. Typically used in applications that require frequent adjustment, the design allows the user to control a variable output such as frequency, speed, or volume control.

A rotary position transducer features a shaftless sliding element inside, and as the object moves, it measures the displacement, resulting in movement.

What angles can rotary position sensors measure?

Rotary position sensors are all different, with their specifications and possibilities. At Curtiss Wright, we provide sensors that detect rotary movement between 10° to 360°.


TYPES OF ROTARY POSITION SENSORS

We offer several rotary position sensors ideal for individual applications. 

Rotary potentiometer

The contacting device consists of a circular track with a wiper attached to the center shaft. The component receives a consistent amount of voltage, and as the shaft rotates, the wiper remains in contact with the track. Displaying a voltage output that is related to the rotary displacement. 

Resolver

Consisting of three coils, one rotates, while the other two remain still at a 90-degree distance. All three coils receive the same amount of current, and comparing the flow between the coils determines the angular displacement of the object. 

Hall-effect sensor

A hall-effect sensor is a contactless component and works effectively in applications that function in harsher environments. It works by measuring the sensor's angular displacement and producing magnetic field changes and a difference in output voltage. While it's an excellent choice for many applications, its reliance on its magnetic field could cause interference if magnets are close to the device.

POSITION SENSORS

A position sensor is a device (sensor) that can detect the movement of an object and facilitate the measurement of a mechanical position. Once the sensor detects motion, it converts it into signals suitable for control, processing, or transmission. 

 

Position sensors are an ideal choice when detecting an object, and the recording of its position is required, as the feedback signal contains accurate positional information.  

 

A position sensor may indicate the position or displacement in linear travel, rotational angle, or three-dimensional space.
